Position
Assistant Librarian
Accountable to
Head Librarian
Summary of Work
Under the general supervision of the Head Librarian, performs professional and technical work in operating and maintaining the public library.
Job Characteristics
- Nature of work: varied and complex duties in processing materials and public requests related to library operation
- Personal Contacts: frequent contact with public; daily coordination of activities with supervisor
- Supervision Received: Minimal
- Supervision Exercised: Direction of the activities of substitutes and volunteers in conjunction with the Head Librarian
Areas of Job Accountability and Performance
- Checks out and reshelves books and maintains stacks
- Receives application for and grants library cards
- Renews and cancels library cards on a yearly basis
- Answers questions concerning reference materials, periodicals and books
- Assists patrons in operation of microfilm reader and photocopier
- Issues overdue notices and collects fines
- Maintains daily activities worksheet
- Instructs students and others in library use
- Assists in research requests
- Organizes local history collection
- Helps organize special exhibits
- Delivers books to shut-ins
- Maintains a tranquil library environment
- Conducts yearly inventory
- Attends workshops and maintains membership in professional organizations
- Performs other related duties as required.
Job Requirements
Knowledge: This position requires a working knowledge of library principles, organization, operations and procedures and reference materials and books.
Skills and Abilities: This position requires skills in inventory, record-keeping, and operation of library equipment; ability to perform a variety of duties without supervision, to communicate orally and in writing, to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors and the public.
Education and Experience
The above knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in liberal arts or library science, and some experience in library operations.

Evaluation of this position will be based primarily upon the preceding job description requirements and duties. Examples of job performance criteria include the following:
- Performs assigned duties
- Assists in providing library services
- Maintains accurate records of ILL requests and postage
- Prepares and submits accurate reports
- Performs supervisory function in absence of Head Librarian
- Maintains contemporary knowledge of library practices
- Observes work hours
- Demonstrates punctuality
- Displays tact and patience when dealing with the public
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors and the public
- Dresses professionally
- Maintains the display case monthly (contacts other clubs etc.)
- Performs ILL for Patron
