Children's Librarian - Library System Operator II - Children's Services

Primary Objective of Position

Under the general direction of the Library Director, works collaboratively with other Library staff members to deliver professional quality library service to the public. Has primary responsibility for general and specialized service to children and bookmobile patrons. Has special responsibility for all children's programming. Shares with the Library Director responsibility for the selection of children's and bookmobile books, and other relevant information resources in all formats including the internet. As a member of the Library staff is required to keep abreast of all Library activities and priorities, with particular focus on how these priorities might affect responsibilities and activities within own position. Performs all routine library functions including book and periodical shelving.

Major Areas of Accountability and Performance

  • Works collaboratively with other Library staff members to plan, organize and coordinate a comprehensive children's library program and bookmobile trips in a rotating schedule.
  • In collaboration with the rest of the Library staff provides general and specialized reference and readers advisory service, library orientation, programming and instruction specifically for children. Devises search strategies to accommodate children and bookmobile patrons using information resources including the internet, WLN and the book and periodical collections of the Library.
  • Is responsible for the safe operation of the bookmobile and the personal safety of each bookmobile patron on each trip.
  • Is responsible for routine record keeping and maintenance of the bookmobile.
  • Collects and provides statistical reports in areas of responsibility.
  • In the absence of the Library Director, can assume operational responsibility for the Library's daily operations.
  • Monitors, selects from the Library's collections and dispenses library materials used on weekly bookmobile trips and during children's programs. Handles in a timely fashion all patron requests for materials.
  • Performs routine updating functions of the Library's Dynix circulation records. Oversees creation of overdue notices and bills from the Dynix automated circulation system.
  • Supports overall Library operations and services through projects and other duties as appropriate and assigned. Actively supports Library colleagues, Library service goals and the Library's mission.
  • As possible, participates in state wide, regional and national activities of the library profession.

Supervision - Responsibility for the Work of Others

Supervises as assigned staff, volunteers, work study students, community service workers, and summer youth workers, including assigning work, training, monitoring and evaluating assigned work.

Education, Training, and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's Degree or two years (minimum) of experience in an automated library preferred, including familiarity with use of computerized library resources; affinity for cooperation and collaboration; good interpersonal, verbal and written skills important; service orientation essential; comfort with a varied pace, overlapping tasks, details and change. Class B1 drivers license required.

  • At library closing times, correctly shuts down all equipment including computers, secures the building and assures lock-up.
