Summary of Work

Under the policy guidance and direction of the board, the Head Librarian shall perform the administrative, supervisory and professional work in planning and delivering library services.

Job Characteristics

  • Nature of work: planning and coordinating activities related to library operation
  • Personal contact: frequent contact with public, maintains contact with other departments and professional groups, attends and records minutes from monthly board meetings
  • Supervision received: monthly direction will be given from the board
  • Supervision Exercised: daily coordination of duties with library staff and volunteers

Areas of Job Accountability and Performance

  • Must have knowledge in and be able to operate a Computer System
  • Oversees the daily operation of the library
  • Selects circulation, reference and periodical materials
  • Prepares preliminary budget, financial and activity reports, and presents such information to the board
  • Hires, trains, schedules and supervises staff
  • Classifies and catalogs library materials
  • Shares daily circulation duties
  • Maintains employee records
  • Determines books and materials to be mended or discarded
  • Maintains membership in professional organizations
  • Remains informed concerning library-related issues
  • Answers public inquires and prepares press releases
  • Assists in the activities of the Board
  • Communicates with civic groups and elected officials regarding library issues
  • Writes grant proposals
  • Plans and develops Summer reading programs
  • Performs other related duties as required

Education and Experience

The above knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of educations and experience equivalent to a masters of Library Science degree, five years training in library services, and or a combination of both.
