Under the general supervision of the Library Director

Position Overview

A Library Assistant I provides assistance with library functions in offering quality library services to the public. This position focuses on shelving, technical processing assistance and general assistance duties. The Library Assistant I will acknowledge and accept the Library’s Code of Service, respect the Library’s confidentiality laws and maintain the integrity of the Lewistown Public Library.

Principle Job Priorities (not all inclusive and may be modified at anytime)

General

  • Aspires to help patrons to become lifelong library users by introducing them to the wealth of library resources and enables them to use library services effectively.
  • Assists patrons in locating needed resources (general) or referring them to other staff for assistance.
  • May provide general assistance for Internet usage and computer programs within the Library.
  • Sustains the dignity of patrons by giving them correct, non-judgmental and complete responses to their informational needs. Provides help where needed and respects patron’s right to browse.
  • Consults with peers on library matters.
  • Keeps Director informed as to project progression, needs and outcomes. 
  • Collects data and compiles reports as requested.
  • May assist in minor maintenance and manages technological equipment (photocopier, printers, AV equipment, computers and reader/printer) requiring minimal servicing and accountability within the library.  May handle monetary payments for fines, donations, ILL, etc.
  • Enforces library rules for the protection of library patrons and property.
  • Helps to maintain a neat, clean, functional and inviting library.  Provides a welcoming and safe atmosphere.
  • May participate in circulation tasks, which may include checkouts, record keeping, opening and closing routines, reserves, sorting mail and other tasks associated with circulating materials.
  • Assists with library promotion and services as assigned.
  • May assist the public, on the phone or in person, on the use, availability and status of library materials.
  • Interacts with customers and staff in a courteous and professional manner and refers potentially volatile or sensitive situations to other staff ensure quality customer service.
  • Performs duties with adherence to library standards of accuracy, timeliness, tact and confidentiality.

Shelf Maintenance Responsibilities

  • Assists with shelving library materials.
  • May assist with shelf organization, arrangements and shelf maintenance in all areas of the library.
  • Maintains shelf and book cleanliness. 
  • Keeps Director informed as to needs and recommendations.

Technical Processing Responsibilities (Under supervision of Library Assistant III –Technical Services)

  • Assists in preparing library materials for processing and making them shelf ready.
  • Assists in repairs of questionable quality or broken audio and visual cassettes.
  • Assists in maintaining library materials, i.e. mending and repairs
  • Assists in de-processing discarded library materials.

Other Assigned Duties may include:

  • Assisting with Youth Services activities and programs.
  • Assisting with Outreach programs.
  • Simple maintenance and manual tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision

Under direct supervision of the Library Director, but may be directed in certain tasks by other library staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

High School diploma or GED is required. A desire to work with the public is essential.  Computer knowledge and skills is desirable. Must be willing to learn or know how to use Online Public Access Catalog, electronic resources and other information technology sources to meet typical library needs; must feel comfortable referring inquiries to another Library Assistant. A working knowledge of office procedures is desirable. 

The position requires a commitment to service excellence; the ability to work well with others in a team; and the ability to remain flexible and positive in a time of continuing change.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Physical requirements include ability to move around the facility, walk, sit, bend, climb, kneel, stoop, carry; Ability to use hand and finger motion with enough manual dexterity to use computers and handle library items; Lift up to 25#, or greater with assistance; and perform other efforts such as pushing a loaded book cart as identified with normal library work; must have the ability to communicate with patrons effectively; having the ability to talk with clarity and be able to listen to patrons accurately; Must have specific vision abilities (adjusted) that include close and distance vision with good depth perception; reasonable accommodations may be available; Typing ability and computer skills desirable.

Duties are performed in surroundings where undesirable physical conditions and hazards are minor and controllable.
