Summary of Work
Performs various duties as assigned in the operation of the library including assisting with circulation duties, processing library materials and assisting where needed. Makes decisions on how best to assist the library users.
Job Characteristics
Nature of Work
This position performs semi-skilled duties requiring adherence to standards of accuracy, timeliness, tact and confidentiality. Position requires ability to move and shelve heavy books. Position works varying work schedule and includes some evenings and weekends. Consequence of errors may result in dissatisfied library users and loss of time to find and correct mistakes.
Personal Contacts
Continual and demanding contact with the public. Coordinates duties with other employees and supervisor to complete tasks.
Supervisions Received
Direction from Library Director and other regular staff members.
Essential Functions
Position requires ability to communicate orally and in writing, retrieve and return books to shelves, type, read written material and operate a computer, Maintains operating knowledge of the library automation system.
Areas of Job Accountability and Performance
- Strives to meet the objectives of the library as established by the Board.
- Serves all library users at the circulation desk and answers any reference questions or refers the library users to someone who is able to assist them.
- Maintains confidentiality of library users records.
- Checks in library material and shelves materials in the proper order and place. librarian.
- Processes library material under the direction of the collection librarian.
- Keeps work areas neat.
- Assists with ongoing book inventory.
- Attends staff meetings to learn all procedures and the changes.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Job Requirements
Knowledge
This position requires a basic knowledge of library practices, procedures and techniques; regulations and departmental policies pertaining to library services.
Skills
This position requires skills in word processing, filing and using the library equipment including the online catalog and automation system. Skills in dealing with people.
Abilities
Position requires ability to learn a variety of procedures; understand the role and the purpose of the library; establish good rapport with library users; pay attention to accuracy; work with interruptions; maintain confidentiality; maintain effective working relationship with fellow employees, supervisors and the public and to communicate effectively.
Education and Experience
The above knowledge, skills, ability are usually acquired through a combination of education and/or experience equivalent to:
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Library classes or experience working in a library is preferred.
- Strong interest in reading preferred.
