Primary Objective of Position

Under the general direction of the Library Trustees, works collaboratively with other Library staff members to deliver professional quality library service to the public. Has primary responsibility for all Library services, resources and staff. Integrates Library services with the Library's mission, Strategic Plan, and objectives. Is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the Library's automated systems, including circulation (Dynix), network internet connection (Windows NT) and the Library's individual computers, terminals, and printers. Supervises cataloging for books and assures quality control for all bibliographic and related records in the Library's catalog system (Dynix). Plans and administers on-line access to internal resources (CD-ROM) and external resources (OCLC/InfoTrac/iPage). As a member of the Library staff is required to keep abreast of all Library activities and priorities, with particular focus on how these priorities might affect responsibilities and activities of the Library. Performs all routine library functions including book and periodical shelving.

Major Areas of Accountability and Performance

  • With the Library Trustees leads the short and long range planning activities of the Library, including new or changed services and budgetary needs. Coordinates this planning with the County's annual and long range planning efforts.
  • Manages all Library operations, including book and journal collections, automation and information technology, bookmobile, reference and library instruction, budget and facilities, through initiative, coordination and collaboration.
  • Coordinates and supervises the work of the Library staff, including training, monitoring, evaluating, re-directing and mentoring for growth. The Library staff presently includes five full time employees, two substitutes, the Director of the Adult Learning Center, and a varying number of volunteers.
  • With the staff and print and technology vendors, assures optimal materials (book, periodical, and electronic) selection, development and maintenance. Keeps current with relevant review literature, recommends appropriate library materials and monitors the materials budget.
  • In collaboration with the staff, works to assure optimal bookmobile services to the rural residents of the county.
  • Provides back-up staffing of the Library, as needed; participates in a rotating work schedule.
  • Maintains awareness of trends in public library service and other changes which may indicate new or changed Library collections and services.
  • Supports overall Library operations and services through projects and other duties as appropriate and assigned. Actively supports Library colleagues, Library service goals and the Library's mission.
  • As possible, participates in statewide, regional and national activities of the library profession.

Supervision - Responsibility for the Work of Others

Supervises staff, volunteers, work study students, community service workers, and summer youth workers, including assigning work, training, monitoring and evaluating assigned work.

Education, Training, and Experience Requirements

Masters of Science in Library Science (MSLS) and four years (minimum) of experience in an automated library preferred, including a very high familiarity with the use and management of computerized library resources in a networked environment; affinity for cooperation and collaboration; good interpersonal, verbal and written skills important; service orientation essential; comfort with a varied pace, overlapping tasks, details and change.

At library closing times, correctly shuts down all equipment including computers, secures the building and assures lock-up.

Automation

  • Installs, maintains and documents data/video/telecommunications cable network.
  • Installs and maintains data communication equipment in network hubs and computers.
  • Oversees installation and maintenance of voice communications equipment.
  • Organizes, maintains and documents the microcomputer and network hardware locations and configurations, including physical organization, operating procedures, safety standards, parts inventories and hardware purchasing.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs library microcomputer and printer equipment.
  • Maintains a filing and documentation system, including original equipment and installation documentation, equipment and wiring installation and maintenance procedures, and equipment inventory.
  • Maintains and performs regular periodic backup of data on network and circulation computer systems.
  • Performs all system administration functions for voice and circulation systems and multi-user public access computer systems.
  • Maintains network information systems, performs network system administration and installs and configures software related to other library job functions.
  • Maintains documentation for, and trains staff involved in, computer and voice system use and administration. Provides complex problem resolution for these systems.
  • Recommends and supervises contractor and subcontractors and ensures their compliance with work standards and policies and assists in the completion of specific tasks.
  • Assists patrons and staff with hardware and software related problems.
  • Communicates with vendors and manufacturers as necessary.
