Address Known: Need to Know Land Owner

To learn the owner of land:

1. Click Find Land Ownership.

  • If the browser window is small, expand the window to full screen to view the entire application interface.
  • To center the map in the window, click the Montana Cadastral text (upper left corner).

2. Click Search. The Choose Parcel Search Criteria pane opens.

3. At the bottom of the Choose Parcel Search Criteria pane, click on By Address.

4. Enter the address in the text box then click on the Search bar. Property that the address locator finds will display via links below the Search bar.

Note: You may see many links displayed because the search returns property in Montana possibly from more than one town. Knowing the address ZIP code will help you know which links are associated with the property of interest. There also may be multiple links in one Zip code because multiple address locator tools are used to increase the success of matching. The link that will be the most helpful to provide land owner information is the one that corresponds with the blue pointer that is centered on the parcel.

5. Click on the owner name link for the property of interest.

6. Click on the parcel of interest. A Property Record Card pane displays over the map showing the parcel highlighted in blue. Explore the content of the Property Record Card to learn about the land parcel. You can close and open this pane using the blue arrow tab.

Note: If the land owner identified on the Property Record Card is a business entity, you may obtain additional information using the Business Entity Search tool ( on the Montana Secretary of State website.

7. In the map that displays, you can also:

  • Explore the parcel in its context:
    • Use zoom tools (the minus and plus signs) to change the map scale. Note: The parcel, the topographic background, and some map data will only display when the map is zoomed in far enough.
    • Click, hold, and drag the map to change the area shown in the window.
    • Add an aerial photo background by clicking the Aerial button.
    • Add a topographic background by clicking the Topo button.
  • Explore a nearby parcel by clicking on it. The parcel is highlighted in blue and the Property Record Card changes to display information about this parcel.
  • Navigate backward or forward to compare different parcels viewed during the same Montana Cadastral map viewing session using the Prev and Next buttons.
  • Print the map using the print icon button.
  • Print the Property Record Card using the Print link.
