Tips for Getting Free Print Ads in Your Local Paper

One print advertisement has been developed to support the statewide marketing campaign. We have purchased ad space in the Montana Senior News. You and your library can play an important role in ensuring that newspapers throughout the state also run the print advertisement. Here’s how to negotiate some free advertising space.

  • Contact the Advertising Manager at your local newspaper. Identify yourself as a representative from the local library community. Schedule a short meeting (15 – 30 minutes) with the representative to talk about the campaign, and the importance of getting this print ad in the local paper.
  • At the meeting, discuss the overall marketing campaign. Make sure that you have marketing materials that you can share with the paper’s representative. Make sure that you have a copy of the print ad to leave with them; also offer to email them a digital version (available from download on our Web site) if that’s the method they prefer. Be sure to emphasize the importance of running the print advertisement; the newspaper will be supporting one of our state’s most beloved institutions – libraries!
  • Talk with colleagues — including trustees, members of your Friends group and business leaders — from your local community to see if anyone has any real relationships with management officials at your local newspaper. If so, ask that person to place a call the newspaper on behalf of the local library community to encourage running the print ad.
  • Please follow-up with a note thanking your contact for his or her support of your library. Extend an invitation to tour your library. Offer information on upcoming events and special programs and services.
  • Include the newspaper on your library's mailing list to ensure that reporters have the latest newsletter updates on what is happening at your library.
