(HELENA)---The Montana State Library has cancelled its presentation of "The ACLU Freedom Files" that was to be held on Friday, February 24, 2006 from 3 - 4:30 p.m.

"We originally decided to premiere this series because the Patriot Act has particular resonance for Montana's libraries and library users," said Darlene Staffeldt, Montana State Librarian. "However, upon further reflection of our goal to provide accurate and impartial information and guidance to Montana's libraries, we felt that showing this video without providing opportunity for all aspects of the issue to be presented was not in the best interest of our users."

"Section 215 of the Patriot Act directly affects Montana's libraries and library users," said Staffeldt. "Since the Patriot Act was enacted, the State Library has worked diligently to provide accurate and impartial information to Montana's libraries regarding this set of laws. Our main goal in regard to the Patriot Act, and indeed in regard to all laws that affect library usage, is to provide neutral guidance and correct information so that Montana's libraries are in accordance with federal and state laws."

"As a state agency, the Montana State Library is dedicated to providing a balanced reflection that considers all aspects of an issue," continued Staffeldt. "Our originally conceived presentation of "The ACLU Freedom Files" did not meet this standard, and thus has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

Through its statewide programs, the Montana State Library empowers Montanans; enhances learning in families and communities; builds 21st Century skills; and provides opportunities for civic participation. For more information about the State Library, visit http://msl.mt.gov.
