READER'S DIGEST AND NEWSWEEK RENEWALS

If you are a subscriber to the Reader's Digest or Newsweek on cassette, please watch for the annual renewal notice that APH (American Printing House) sends out each fall. If you wish to renew your subscription, you will need to send the notice to APH, or else your subscription will lapse. If your subscription has stopped, please call Lee at 1-800-332-3400, or 406-444- 2064 and he will contact APH. The renewal letter mentions giving a donation to APH, and while donations are appreciated, they are not necessary to receive a subscription.

MAGAZINE CHANGES

NLS has announced that it will continue to transfer magazines from flexible-disc (FD) format to cassette format. The magazines slated for this change with the first issue of 1999 are: Civilization, bimonthly; Computer Life, monthly; Consumer Reports, monthly; Eating Well, bimonthly; Ebony, monthly; Good Housekeeping, monthly; Money, monthly; The New York Times Book Review, weekly; People, weekly; Stereo Review, monthly; Travel Holiday, monthly; and Working Woman, monthly. The transition will continue in 2000 with another set of titles and all remaining FD magazine titles will be transferred to cassette in 2001.

TEXTBOOKS AND PLAYBACK EQUIPMENT

If your child needs recorded textbooks, they can be obtained from Recordings for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D). RFB&D is not affiliated with the Montana Talking Book Library. They have their own eligibility requirements and application procedures. Contact them direct at 1-800-221-4792.

If the only recorded reading materials your child needs or wants are textbooks, you must purchase special playback equipment from RFB&D or another source. The Library can not lend equipment for the sole purpose of playing textbooks. If you get equipment from MTBL and do not borrow books from us regularly, you will be required to return it. If you have questions regarding playback equipment for schools or students, please contact Alberta at 1-800-332-3400 or 406-444- 2064.

Please be kind and rewind Descriptive Videos before returning.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM A SUCCESS

The Good, the Bad and the Bugly Summer Reading program was a huge success with 35 participants. Many prizes were awarded to recognize young readers. Prizes included commercially produced books on tape, and a descriptive video. Roberta appreciates all the participants willingness to read and share ideas about what can be done to better the summer reading program. The theme for next year's program is tentatively set as "Dig up a good book". If you have any ideas for books to be included or for activities, please contact Roberta at 444-2064 or 1-800-332-3400.

GARBLED TAPES

Have you been listening to a book only to be frustrated when you turn the tape over and it sounds garbled? Here are some tips to try before returning the tape to the library.

  1. The tape may be loose. Take the cassette out of the machine and tighten the tape by turning the left spoke on the cassette counter clockwise.
  2. Static buildup can also cause the tape to sound garbled. To eliminate static, tap the cassette gently on a table top or desk. Do this two or three times, turning the tape over each time.
  3. With the machine handle facing you, check the variable speed control (the sliding knob at the top right-hand side of the player) and the speed switch (just below the variable speed control). Both need to be on the left side.

If the problem remains, tie a piece of string or rubber band around the cassette and place in the top of the container, braille side down. Return the entire book to the library. Call to request a replacement, or check the box in the upper left hand corner of the return address label marked defective book/send another copy. If you do not want another copy, please check the box in the upper left hand corner of the return mailing label marked defective book.

ANNUAL VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION

This year's volunteer recognition was held in conjunction with the Talking Book Library's 30th Anniversary celebration at the Montana State Capitol Rotunda on September 29th. The celebration began with Christie Briggs, Regional Librarian, giving a brief history of the Talking Book Library. State Librarian, Karen Strege, introduced Secretary of State, Mike Cooney, who presented special awards to volunteers. The 1998 Special Appreciation Award was given to Barbara Baarson for her many years of dedicated service in circulation and many other areas of the library. Chuck Wirth was honored from the Telephone Pioneers for his hard work in maintaining playback equipment. The Recording Team of the year was Lea Blunn, narrator, Mary Zednick, monitor, Jane Briney and Giles Walker, reviewers. Stan Lynde, author and cartoonist, spoke on his love of books and reading and how that had been nurtured as a "kid" and how important it is for all people to have access to books, and "reading". Carol yn Sung, Network Division Chief of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically handicapped, presented a plaque for Commendation of Service to the Telephone Pioneers. Special life- saver awards were given to the young people who helped us out over the summer and awards were given for 5, 10 and 15 years of service. Each volunteer was given a plate etched by State Library staff.

For Better Service....

  1. Return each book as soon as you have finished it. We have a limited number of copies and often there is a waiting list.
  2. Rewind all cassette tapes before returning them. To rewind, put the cassette on side 1, 5, etc. and press the rewind button.
  3. Do not lend your books or equipment to others.
  4. Include your name and address on all correspondence to the Library.
  5. Place a rubber band or string around damaged cassettes. Mark the defective book box in the upper left hand corner of the return mailing label, or if you want a replacement copy mark the defective book/send another copy box.
  6. Notes about books or services should not be placed inside book containers, because they can be easily missed or lost.
  7. If you have a problem with your machine and sent it back to the Library for repair, please call the Library and ask for a replacement machine. Machines are not automatically sent back out.
  8. If you are not getting the books you want, or have been getting too many of a certain author, call and let your reader advisor know. The only way we know you are not happy with your service is if you let us know.
