Pixel Art to Real Life:

Pixel Art to Real Life encourages participants to explore patterns, colors, and textures in nature through macro photography and iNaturalist. After photographing natural features outdoors and identifying them online, participants translate their observations into pixel-style artwork using grid paper and colored pencils.

Program Overview

Participants take close-up photos of natural textures such as petals, wings, moss, or tree bark then upload them to iNaturalist for species identification. Back indoors, they create pixel art inspired by the geometry and visual patterns they observed, blending scientific inquiry with artistic creativity.

Audience

Children and teens recommended ages nine through fourteen. Easily adaptable for  intergenerational programming

  Preparation Checklist

Smartphones or tablets with camera access

Grid paper in assorted sizes

Colored pencils or markers

Optional magnifying lenses for enhanced detail observation

A safe and accessible outdoor area for photography

Running the Program Step-by-Step

Introduction (10 minutes)

Introduce macro photography and show examples of patterns in nature including symmetry, color gradients, repeated structures, and textures.

Outdoor Photography (20 minutes)

Explain how to safely explore and photograph natural features. Guide participants outdoors to capture macro images of plants, insects, or textures they find interesting.

Upload and Identify (15 minutes)

Back indoors, participants upload their images to iNaturalist and explore the species identifications. Encourage them to look closely at shapes, patterns, and structures revealed through macro photography.

Pixel Art Creation (15 minutes)

Participants choose one of their identified species and recreate it as pixel art using grid paper. Encourage them to focus on color blocks and simplified shapes that reflect the natural patterns they observed.

Share and Reflect

End the session with a small sharing circle. Participants show their artwork and reflect on how patterns in nature inspired their designs.

*Please adjust the amount of time taken for these steps as you see fit.
