Pixel Art to Real Life
Pixel Art to Real Life encourages participants to explore patterns, colors, and textures in nature through macro photography and iNaturalist. After photographing natural features outdoors and identifying them online, participants translate their observations into pixel‑style artwork using grid paper and colored pencils.
Program Overview
Participants take close‑up photos of natural textures such as petals, wings, moss, or tree bark, then upload them to iNaturalist for species identification. Indoors, they create pixel art inspired by the geometry and patterns they observed, blending scientific inquiry with artistic creativity.
Learning Outcomes
 Strengthen observation and pattern‑recognition skills
Learn to use macro photography to capture fine visual details
Use iNaturalist to identify species and explore biodiversity
Transform scientific observations into creative pixel artwork
Build confidence using both technology and art techniques
Audience
Children and teens ages nine through fourteen. Easily adaptable for intergenerational programming.

Sample Agenda:
Introduction (10 minutes)
Introduce macro photography and show examples of patterns in nature like symmetry, gradients, repetition, and textures.
Outdoor Photography (20 minutes)
Guide participants outdoors to capture macro images of plants, insects, or textures they find interesting.
Upload & Identify (15 minutes)
Participants upload images to iNaturalist and explore species identifications, noting shapes, colors, and structures.
Pixel Art Creation (15 minutes)
Participants choose one identified species and recreate its patterns as pixel art using grid paper.
Share & Reflect
Participants share their artwork and reflect on how their natural observations inspired their designs.
Take it to the next level
Display completed pixel art in the library as a rotating exhibit
Create a collaborative mosaic using all participant designs
Provide large grid paper or simplified shapes for enhanced accessibility
Offer pre‑taken macro photos for participants unable to go outside
