Maintenance & Support
The Library Telescope Program provides a clear structure to help Montana libraries sustain their checkout telescopes. Routine care ensures the telescope remains in good working order for patrons. Basic maintenance includes replacing batteries, quick eyepiece cleaning with a Lens Pen, occasional mirror alignment (collimation), and periodic replacement of string attachments. Connecting with a local astronomer or handy volunteer can be helpful but is not required.
Maintenance Tiers
The Library Telescope Program identifies four tiers of maintenance to help libraries determine the appropriate level of support.
Tier 1 – Simple Fixes: Battery replacement, tightening components, and finder alignment. Performed by library staff or volunteers.
Tier 2 – Part Replacement: Finder replacement and eyepiece repair. Performed by trained staff or volunteers.
Tier 3 – Advanced Mechanical/Optical Repair: Collimation and focuser repair. Performed by advanced volunteers.
Tier 4 – Specialist Repairs: Mirror issues or structural damage. Performed by spectrUM, the Library Telescope Program, or the vendor.

Support from Telescope Ambassadors
Libraries are encouraged to recruit local volunteers or astronomy club members to serve as Library Telescope Ambassadors. Ambassadors apply on a rolling basis, undergo background checks, and complete training to ensure they can properly assist with patron support and telescope maintenance.
Operational Support
The Library Telescope Program provides a 1‑minute check‑out and check‑in procedure to help front desk staff quickly verify telescope readiness. Staff should ensure the finder is switched off to conserve battery life and perform a quick visual inspection of the telescope and included accessories. This checklist is available as a Google doc that you may download and customize to suit your needs.
Program-Level Assistance
The Big Sky, Bigger Dreams initiative provides statewide support for telescope operations. spectrUM helps libraries troubleshoot telescopes and host public astronomy events; the Montana State Library contributes distribution, communications, and programming guidance; NASA personnel participate in virtual statewide events; and the Montana Space Grant Consortium assists public outreach through its affiliate network.
Obtaining a Telescope
Libraries that still need a telescope can request one through tinyurl.com/BigSkyTelescope. The second round of telescope shipments begins in August 2026.
