Endemic or Invasive?
The Endemic or Invasive? Sorting Wall is an interactive, walk‑up activity where patrons sort species images into two categories: species native to Montana and species that are invasive. Using Velcro, magnets, or laminated cards, patrons can explore biodiversity, learn ecological concepts, and optionally use iNaturalist to deepen their understanding. The wall functions like a hands‑on mini exhibit that requires no staff supervision.
A Simple, Eye‑Catching Wall Setup
Designate a section of wall or a bulletin board with two clearly labeled areas for sorting species. Provide Velcro or magnetic zones for attaching the species cards so patrons of all ages can walk up and interact at any time.

Species Cards Patrons Can Move Around
Laminated species cards show clear pictures of animals, plants, insects, or fungi found in Montana. Patrons pick up a card, read about the species, and place it in the category they think fits best.
Considerations for your cards:
Patrons scan the QR code to read the iNaturalist information and decide whether the species is native or invasive based on the profile.
You can rotate species cards every season or whenever staff have time. This keeps the wall fresh, engaging, and relevant throughout the year.

Tie it in to Community Science
Add a small sign inviting patrons to explore real sightings or upload their own observations. This ties the wall directly into community science without adding work for staff.
Consider prompts on the sign like:
