Window Wildlife Watch
Observe birds, insects, and other wildlife from the library window and log discoveries in iNaturalist.

Create a Library iNaturalist Project
Set up a simple iNaturalist project. Keep the project boundary limited to the library building or property. Post a QR code at the window station so patrons can add their sightings. Visitors who are interested can upload observations independently while others simply enjoy watching.
Add a Direct Upload QR Code
Place a sign encouraging people to scan a QR code to upload their sightings directly to iNaturalist. The QR code should open the upload page in the app or browser. This keeps participation optional and completely passive.
Featured Window Wildlife
Staff can check the project page occasionally and print one interesting observation to display. Label it 'Spotted from our window' and credit the community. This encourages more participation without requiring a formal program.
ID Tools
Include a QR code linking to the Montana Field Guide or Seek by iNaturalist. A small sign can encourage visitors to try identifying what they saw and optionally add it to iNaturalist afterward. This provides tools without needing staff help.
End-of-Season Observation Count
Use the project’s auto-generated stats to create a simple end-of-season display. Show the total number of species, the most commonly observed birds, and any unusual sightings. Patrons can see how their observations contribute to the library community.
Participation Is Optional
Signage should make it clear that contributing to iNaturalist is optional. Encourage watching, note-taking, and enjoying the window station, with iNaturalist as an optional next step for anyone interested in helping community science. This keeps the station calm while offering a doorway into deeper engagement.
