Library Participation
Participation Requirements
Participating libraries have one requirement: make the telescope available for checkout to patrons.

Libraries are encouraged—but not required—to host events such as star parties, promote telescope use, and invite local astronomy enthusiasts to become Library Telescope Ambassadors.
Ambassadors & Volunteer Support
The Library Telescope Program trains volunteers known as Ambassadors, who assist libraries with telescope use, community events, and basic maintenance. Volunteers apply on a rolling basis and complete background checks and training before supporting libraries.
Cataloging Information
Each telescope is already cataloged and ready to import using existing records:

OCLC Record: 1583695236
Partners Catalog: Apertura Library Telescope

Libraries should use these established records when adding the telescope to their system.
Checkout Best Practices
Recommended checkout guidelines include:

• Local checkout only (not shared through Partners)
• 7-day checkout period
• Holds allowed; reservations ideal if possible
• Replacement value listed as $400–$500 (telescope price: $369)
• Optionally provide books or planispheres alongside the telescope

A 1‑minute checkout/check‑in procedure and staff checklist is available in the form of a Google doc that you can download and modify based on your needs.
Telescope Maintenance
Maintenance tasks are simple and infrequent, including battery replacement, eyepiece cleaning with a Lens Pen, occasional mirror alignment, and minor hardware upkeep. Libraries may also engage local astronomers or handy volunteers for additional help. Visit the Maintenance page in this trunk for more information.
Ordering a Telescope
Libraries that still need a telescope may request one using the project’s order form. The second round of telescopes will ship beginning August 2026.
